Invention History of Adhesive Tape

The structure of adhesive tape products usually includes a base material layer cut into narrow strips and coated with adhesive on one or both sides of the material. This base layer is made from many types of materials such as plastic, textiles, cardboard or metal foil, laminated aluminum foil, fiberglass, synthetic fibers… Adhesive tape products are manufactured in many different sizes with many separate applications in practice.

The indispensable ingredient on each adhesive tape product is the adhesive layer, the user often needs to apply a small force so that the adhesive layer can adhere firmly to the surface of the material. The type of glue used for adhesive tape was invented by Dr. Horace in 1845, an American surgeon, while he was trying to find an effective adhesive method for use in surgical procedures.

Later, Oscar Troplowitz, a German inventor working for Beiersdorf AG, invented a way to use a piece of cloth with adhesive on one side, he named it Leukoplast (the current “Cloth Tape” on the market). This was followed by the invention of “Paper Tape” in 1925, “Transparent Tape” in 1930 and a hand-held tape dispenser in 1932 by Mr. John A Borden, an engineer at a large chemical company. In the following years, many inventions of different types of tapes were born, creating a diverse market of products and tape designs as it is today, meeting different needs and purposes in all fields from industry to consumer.
