The History of Adhesive Tape

Adhesive tape typically consists of a backing material cut into narrow strips and coated with an adhesive layer on one or both sides. This backing can be made from a wide range of materials, such as plastic, woven fabric, paper, metal foil (including aluminum), fiberglass, or synthetic fibers. Adhesive tapes are manufactured in various sizes and types to serve a multitude of practical applications.

An essential component of any adhesive tape is the adhesive layer itself; users generally need to apply slight pressure to ensure the adhesive bonds firmly to the target surface. The adhesive used for tape was invented in 1845 by Dr. Horace, an American surgeon, while he was seeking an effective bonding method for use in surgical procedures.

Subsequently, Oscar Troplowitz, a German inventor working for Beiersdorf AG, developed a tape made by coating one side of a fabric strip with adhesive; he named it “Leukoplast” (the precursor to the “cloth tape” found on the market today). This was followed by the invention of “paper tape” in 1925, “transparent tape” in 1930, and the handheld tape dispenser in 1932 by John A. Borden, an engineer at a major chemical company. In the years that followed, numerous other types of adhesive tape were invented, creating the diverse market of products and designs available today-catering to a wide range of needs and purposes across sectors from industry to consumer use.
