What is duct tape?
Adhesive tape (also known as adhesive tape) is a familiar product, commonly appearing in daily life and fields such as manufacturing, packaging, medicine, repair… Basically, adhesive tape is a layer of material such as paper, fabric or plastic (polymer) coated with a layer of pressure-sensitive adhesive – making it easy to stick or remove depending on the purpose of use.History of adhesive tape
Although modern adhesive tape has only been around for a few centuries, the principles of adhesion have been used by humans for thousands of years.Ancient times
- The ancient Egyptians used linen soaked in plaster to make funeral masks – an early form of adhesive application.
- In 1676, notes from Thomas Mace – a musical instrument maker – showed the use of wet paper to fix parts when making instruments.
19th Century: The Birth of Medical Tape
- In 1845, William H. Seward and Horace Day in New York invented the first adhesive plaster by coating cotton cloth with glue. This is considered the forerunner of modern medical tape.
- The invention was quickly commercialized by pharmacist Thomas Allcock, using it to treat backaches and whooping cough.
20th Century: Band-Aids and Postage Stamps
- In 1882, Paul C. Beiersdorf (founder of Beiersdorf AG) teamed up with dermatologist Paul Gerson Unna to improve medical adhesive tape.
- In 1921, Earle Dickson, an employee of Johnson & Johnson, invented the adhesive bandage by combining gauze with adhesive tape, creating a bandage for minor wounds.
- During the same period, Rowland Hill invented a postage stamp with a glued back, using a glue mixture of potato starch, wheat, and tree resin.
Popular types of adhesive tape in Vietnam
In the Vietnamese market, there are many different types of tape, serving many purposes:1. Transparent – opaque tape
- Popular in carton and goods packaging industry.
- Advantages: high adhesion, easy to use, reasonable price.
2. Double-sided tape
- Used in decoration, interior, installation of equipment.
- Can be thin (office) or super sticky (industrial).
3. Masking tape
- Applications in paint, fine arts, food packaging.
- Easy to tear by hand, light heat resistant.
4. Cloth tape
- High durability, good bearing capacity, used in repair, refrigeration, industry.
5. Electrical tape
- Good insulation, specialized in civil and industrial electricity.
